John Day Fossil Beds Island in Time Hike

Difficulty: Easy

Length: 1.2 miles round-trip

Elevation Gain: 250 feet

Season: July-September

Location: Anthony Lake area (55 minutes from Baker City)

Notes: Dogs allowed, but be prepared to carry them over the bridges. The metal grates are sharp! Vault toilets. Water is not available, so make sure to pack plenty.

The Island in Time Hike is part of the Sheep Rock Unit in the John Day Fossil Beds. This short hike is perfect for the kids. If you're looking for a longer outing, the Blue Basin Overlook Trial is a 3.25 mile loop and departs from the same trailhead.



Make sure you stop by the Thomas Condon Paleontology Visitor Center while you're in the area.


Getting There: The Sheep Rock Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds is off Highway 19 between Kimberley and Dayville Oregon approximately 2.5 hours from Baker City.
